Watching one of the commercial station’s breakfast news shows on Tuesday morning, they were discussing (breathlessly) whether Ponting’s catch in the second innings of the Second Test against New Zealand on Tuesday (watch it below) was the greatest ever.
Now it’s said you can’t compare cricketers from different eras, but the humble “classic catch”, whether it’s taken by Ponting, Viv Richards, Jonty Rhodes or Neil Harvey is still a classic catch.
So here at Crikey Sports, through the vast resources of YouTube, have found a little pearler of a segment broadcast of Channel Nine’s The Cricket Show.

I’d like to nominate the catch i took last year in gully playing for my local club’s 2nds, but i don’t think i will find any video evidence…
Peter Taylor took one in a one dayer at mid on or mid off that always stuck in my mind.
Having now watched it again, it may have been his goofy celebration that made me remember it.
I also remember Mark Taylor taking a couple of really good ones at slip in a one dayer at the SCG on a very green wicket.
