The author should keep in mind that the NBL has a $35 million deal sitting on the table from Fox Sports.

There was a much much greater dunker in the country at that time. Randy Anderson, Broadmeadows Broncos finest was doing the rounds in the old SEABL/VBA at that time. Bullets offered him a contract but he declined due to his love of the Broncos. I once saw him score 79 points vs a rep side one Wednesday night. He was a freak.

This is probably a great indication of the rise and decline of basketball in this country at that time... North Sydney came to Broadmeadows one year as part of another competition the Broncos were in (that escapes me) and included in that side was the one and only Stunning Steve Carfino, just after he was done as a King. This match was amazing. Anderson for Broadmeadows, Carfino for Sydney... It was one of the highest scoring matches i'd ever seen and every trip down the court was a dunk for either of those two! Broadmeadows Stadium was packed to the rafters with a crowd on Court 2 because they didn't fit in the stand! Crazy days.

It was much the same as a Giants fan in the early '90s. The only thing i liked about the Magic was the Big M giveaways they would have on the way into games. The Magic were always the hated derby rival, whilst the Tigers were something like a second team. It probably had a lot to do with the way the play-offs fell in that period. I can't remember a Giants v Tigers finals series at all, but i remember a couple of Giants v Magic semi final series, and at least 2 (maybe 3) Tigers v Magic grand final series, all in the first half of the 90's.

Hating the Magic made it impossible to get behind the Vic Titans (Magic + Giants merged entity). Especially with Goorjian as coach.

Channel Ten definitely had prime time tv coverage (in Melbourne anyway) of some games, but that may have just been during the play-offs, with a delayed replay the norm during the regular season.

I have been a Tigers fan since the early 90's and remember the Magic rivalry, it was brilliant. As a fan of a side you naturally feel they are good and their opponents inherently evil but with the Tigers and Magic it really was like that. The Magic were like the Dark Side in Star Wars with Goorj being Palpatine and Anstey playing the role of Vader (note like the real Vader he started and finished off on the good side. At the moment he is like the redeemed spirit of Anakin). I guess Ronaldson was like an evil Chewbacca. Either way they were all horrible, horrible jerks (Anstey is pretty cool now).

I hated Parkinson and Perry as well. Perry was awful to Gaze and I often scream out suggestions that he did not belong on the same court as the great man. KA-POW to you Mr.Perry. Let us not forget that repulusive Magic man.

I despise being patronising but I found the Giants just adorable.

If I remember rightly, Basketball making it as far as prime time TV on a Friday night.

Excellent article.

I have been a Tigers supporter all my life and nearly watch them die some years ago. I miss the sold out packed to the rafter Tiger / Magic derby's (and before that the Saints and Specters). My youth through to young adult was full of Gaze, Double D's, Robert Sibley and booing the crap out of Parkinson, Bolton and D Mac (until he came to us of course). My hatred of Tony Ronaldson is second only to my hatred of Gorj.

The NBL needs to do whatever it needs to do, but the one thing i wouldn't be able cope with is the league dying altogether. Given the Taipans news today, they need to do something quick smart.
