AFL: Gold Coast release club song submission, Freo fans rejoice

Firstly, I’m a mad Fremantle fan. I love Freo. I love our song. I have no choice. But I just heard the first submission for Gold Coast club song for the first time and I have a feeling Gold Coast fans are in for a hard time from opposition fans for the foreseeable future. Or until Western Sydney come in.

While this is only a potential candidate — not the official song — the path to creating the football club song in the 21st century is a thankless task.

I have spent the past 13 years being ridiculed for following Freo. Our song, the colour purple, the anchor. All while we were inept on the field. But as the great Matt Price explained so beautifully in Freo; Way To Go and in The Australian, this made us unique.

But you have to feel for the poor Gold Coast supporter. Fremantle may ascend up football’s credibility index. You know you’re on a hiding to nothing when we Fremantle fans can thumb our nose at your ridiculous song and questionable mascot. Oh happy days!

It’s a tough gig, the AFL club song writing business. But this Gold Coast club song submission sounds like some quasi 1970’s punk song sung by a bad cover band featuring the Casio keyboard from the Port Adelaide club song and your favourite Channel 31 TV theme songs.

But despite my thoughts, the song’s composer, Ross Arundale, has at least taken the time to have a go — which is more than I ever did for Freo’s quest for a suitable anthem.

But all the best to the Gold Coast. And on behalf of Freo fans, I (potentially) thank you.

well thats nice they have a song but no club,no place to play apart from the Gabba, last time I lived in Brisbane thats a long way from the GC,wonder if the got all the donald ducks out of the membership list.
We have also seen the thousands who attend games at Carrara, they cant fill that either.
As for West Sydney don’t hold your breath mate you may turn blue waiting for that little pipe dream to come true bit like the GC,no interest, no demand, no ground.
Still if the AFL want to bleed more money the 100mil aint going to last long, are Brisbane and Sydney still on the drip feed, they have been in Sydney for 30 odd years and are still propping them up
