Gold Coast granted conditional AFL licence

The AFL Commission has today awarded the Gold Coast Football Club a provisional licence to become the 17th team in the AFL competition, starting in 2011. The licence will be granted conditional on:

  1. Finalisation of the agreement between the Queensland State Government and the Gold Coast City Council on the terms by which the land for the stadium will be transferred and
  2. Confirmation of Federal Government funding for the Gold Coast City Council’s application to redevelop the stadium at Carrara as part of the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Fund.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank you again for your support and we expect a final decision on the licence very soon. It has been a long and exciting process that has produced some excellent results.

Today is a day of celebration, but tomorrow it’s business as usual as we continue to build the heart and soul of our football club.

The Gold Coast Football Club can also confirm it has secured a major partnership with leading industry super fund Host Plus as foundation sponsor for the next five years.

Host Plus has committed to join our journey based on the new team’s ability to return significant economic and sporting benefits to the Gold Coast tourism and hospitality community.

Today was an historic day as we introduced our team and named our new captain. Congratulations to Marc Lock who will lead the team into our first game at Carrara this Saturday night.

Best wishes

John Witheriff
Chairman
