But what was behind this Law (and political pressure you mention) which had such bi-partisan support? I am confused as to why Australian policy is so tough on asylum seekers. I don't remember giving any kind of electoral support for anything like this. Is it all part of the post 9/11 paranoia or what?? Is anybody saying things were handled this way as a direct implementation of clear policy or is it just bungling plain and simple? I really want to know in plain terms where it is written (ie law) that these people must be treated like this and then I want to know how we can reverse it as soon as possible. Is it bad laws by their nature or just poorly cobbled together without a full understanding of this type of consequence? What is the "political motivation" you mention? Can we be clearer on this, because if there is some lobby group behind it or some way this is meant to win votes then I need to underestand it better. I honestly want to know how we can fix this.
