Although I'm not altogether convinced that some asylum seekers aren't just illegal immigrants, I felt very sorry for some Thai men I saw on the news last night.

Someone had given them a flogging that had left them with welts and cuts all over their bodies. They were shown lying on hospital beds. Some needed help just to stand up.

I don't know that we can say that Howard was a racist. Over the years, he brought in a very large number of migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

But I think it is fair to say that he was far less interested in Aborigines and asylum seekers.

Misuse of the Australian Flag should have a large fine attached to it. Perhaps it would be even better if our young people were discouraged from drinking alcohol. But not everyone is a yobbo.

I think that a large percentage of "do-gooders" and "bleeding hearts" are responsible for Australia's modern woes, since they often oppose any reasonable standard of societal discipline.

Thank you, Andrew, for continuing to highlight the plight of asylum seekers who have been so demonised for the past decade by the Howard Government and a compliant media. I fear not much will really change under Rudd. We still see reports of asylum seekers described as "illegals" when there is absolutely nothing illegal about seeking asylum. It seems from the derision often directed at "do-gooders" and "bleeding hearts" that the absence of compassion has become a common Australian trait. I suppose it was inevitable given cold-hearted Howard's dominance of politics for so long. He encouraged young Australians to be racist, and we will be paying for that for years to come, as the hoons demonstrated on Australia Day in probably every capital city (certainly did where I live, wrapped in Australian flags and yelling insults at non Anglo-Saxons).
