I'm not actually saying the Greens will do well, Beevo. (although I can't see any reason at the moment why they wouldn't do at least as well as last election).

I'm saying they will hold the Senate balance of power, regardless of how well they do - even in a worst case scenario where they were to lose a seat (hard to see them losing a Tasmanian seat, so they only have one other to lose in a half-Senate election). They would hold the balance of power because the Coalition are guaranteed to lose at least one seat (in Qld). As things stand, it would be unlikely for them not to lose another one or two. It is also very unlikely Family First will win a seat.

Even if the Coalition only lose the one, Xenophon+Coalition will still only be 37 seats - one short of blocking legislation and two short of passing anything themselves. It wouldn't matter if the Greens had 4 seats or 8, they would still have balance of power.

So we survive until next year eh? I am not so sure the Greens will do as well as you think come next election. Their opposition to the Carbon reduction fiasco may be seen by voters as too extreme as they seem to accept nothing less than cessation of the industrial age as we know it. I think they are impatient and would have had more success with a softly-softly approach. Bob has let the cat out of the bag. I know their hearts may be in the right place but a lot of folks are suddenly suffering with unexpected unemployment and under employment (myself included) and I do not think we are able to be as far-sighted as the Greens ask of us. We have not much left to give I am afraid.
