Tony Abbott has apologised to Rob Oakeshott after the caller who phoned Oakeshott’s wife and identified himself as “the Devil” was outed as Bill Heffernan.
I have to say, I find Heffernan’s explanation that it was meant as a “light-hearted, well-intended” phone call entirely convincing. He just didn’t want to scare anyone. And what would you find more scary – taking a phone call from the Devil? Or taking a phone call from Bill Heffernan?
I’d sooner take a call from the Devil any day.

Odd – it’s usually the last person you would suspect. Bill’s much higher up my list.
Heff. should have been booted out after the Kirby fiasco and it is a blight on the so-called liberals that he wasn’t.
the ahole is in for another 6 years where is the justice
The backroom powerbrokers of the ALP (Shorten, Arbib, Obeid..) are ‘the faceless men’ but on the other hand backroom powerbrokers of the Liberal Party (Heffernan, Minchin, Alex Hawke) are the brainless men.
Heff hasn’t had any positive press for two decades during which he has made countless sexist, homophobic and just generaly stupid comments (I can’t think of any racist comments of the top of my head, but it wouldn’t surprise me). The fact he is still around says mountains about the failings of the party machine system that underpins our democracy.
While it was arguably conduct unbecoming to a Senator, I actually don’t think there’s anything to this. Heff put his hand up and apologised and his explanation seems reasonable enough to me; stupid, but not malicious.
Move on I say.
“conduct unbecoming to a Senator” – is there such a beast?
Seriously, is there any process for disposing of an unfit Senator?
