Sarah Palin has used the internet to mount a strong attack on critics who have accused her of creating a climate that led to the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
“Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own. They begin and end with the criminals who commit them, not collectively with all the citizens of a state, not with those who listen to talk radio, not with maps of swing districts used by both sides of the aisle, not with law-abiding citizens who respectfully exercise their First Amendment rights at campaign rallies.”
“Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.”

Does she know what ‘blood libel’ means? It a classic anti-semitic claim that Jews have taken the death of Christ onto their whole race. It also refers to the horrible accusation that Jews murder children to use their blood in certain religious rituals.
What does she mean?

If you can’t be bothered reading up on the history of blood libel/general persecution of Jewish people at various points in history then that’s your problem. The literature is there, the historical accounts are there, it will take a quick google or visit to your local library.
I think you’ll find a whole lot of opposition against many of the actions the state of Israel has taken, but that is a completely separate issue from suggesting blood libel was invented by people of the Jewish faith in order to inspire sympathy and maintain ‘social advantage’.

If you do you will find extensive references to the use of the term ‘blood libel’ as anti semitic refereing to a range of accusations about jews using christian blood for one thing or another. Whether it’s a Zionist fabrication or not doesn’t really bear on its traditional use.

Might it not be possible that – over the great sweep of history – some accusations of foul misdeeds against Jews were false and some were not? Must we always accept Jewish guiltlessness as a matter of faith – with scepticism treated as a banishable offense? Were gentiles (the word is usually written thus) always the persecutors and Jews (capitalised by common convention) always the persecuted?
The assumption of total innocence, it seems to me, as as inherently implausible as its opposite – the automatic assumption of guilt.
I’m reminded of the strange story of Dr Toaff, son of an Italian rabbi and specialist in medieval Jewish history, who came to the conclusion that at least one ‘blood libel’ accusation in 15th centruy Italy was borne out by detailed examination of the historical data. For his scholarly pains he was set upon by Abe Foxman of the ADL (we all know as a fact that he never, ever tells a fib) and other self-appointed Jewish referees of historical belief. Rather like Winston Smith in 1984, Toaff eventually recanted.
The tale is told by Israel Shamir in ‘The Bloody Passovers of Dr Toaff’ (easy to Google).
I am not an expert in medieval history and don’t pretend to know if Dr Toaff was correct before his public dressing down or after his public apology. I do, however, prefer that history is debated without recourse to threats and that all points of views are permitted a fair hearing. That’s because I was brought up to admire the principles of the Socratic tradition and the Enlightenment. Yes, it’s old fashioned, I know. But old intellectual traditions die hard – and in an verbal duel between Abe Foxman and Socrates, to this day I’d side with Socrates (although I’d prefer not to be forced to drink hemlock).
