@Socrates - agree that a change of leaders will not help. Unfortunately I think we've passed the point where it's possible to climb out of the current hole. A viable Labor opposition with a realistic shot at Government in 2016 is probably the best we can hope for. As for the budget - the Opposition and the Murdochracy will be screaming that reductions in super tax concessions will be a tax on widows and orphans. Any other budgets cuts ditto and/or they will ruin the country and/or send Australian industry packing off to Brazil or Zimbabwe. And enough people will believe them.

Obviously this issue can't really force an early election. But equally obviously, it is only digging Labor's current public opinion hole deeper. We will get to the point where it is not possible to climb out before the next election. Any change of leader to someone linked to the Gillard coup won't fix anything, and would be a rerun of NSW State Labor tactics, which didn't turn out so well.

On the plus side, recent proposals to reduce super breaks for the wealthy should improve Labor polls.

Hey gapot.... Not a single bill has failed to pass into law. That's functioning government right there. Carbon pollutionreduction, financial advise reform, private health insurance rebate means test.... Paid parental leave and shortly NDIS.... Looking forward to a few more means tests and reduction in payments to private schools....

You are brave gapot @ 2

what exactly can you mean by "without a Federal Govt" ? Someone is passing the laws and doing stuff for the future. Other people are shouting at them and saying they are doing too much or the wrong thing. Whatver you think about them I can assure we have a Federal Govt and it functions quite well.

Australia cant go on much longer without a Federal Government. Lets hope the next move from Ms Gillard is to call an election, as a change of leader before the 2013 election would be dumb.

And what is the so-called Slipper crisis? It is not possible to rort cab vouchers, they have to be handed in to the special minister of state by the cab company for payment and verified by the minister.

And each MP is entitled to the $20,000 travel vouchers anyway so how can it be rorted?

Once the allowance is used, no more travel.

the belly laugh of the day is the very self righteous Australian prattling about government scandals - the same paper who actively cheered for the mass murder of Iraqis which the ALP opposed.
