Football, philosophy, and the London riots
Not since Eric Cantona in the mid-1990s has football had such an outspoken social critic as former Manchester City and Newcastle United star, Joey Barton. In 1995 Cantona fronted a press conference following his kung-fu kick of a spectator by making a single statement, “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea”.
Today Barton uses Twitter to vent his frustration at club management, his rapture in moving to a supportive club environment, and his thoughts on various world events.
