As a general rule, when a lobbyist becomes a household name outside Washington it is not a good thing – not for the lobbyist and, most certainly, not for the rest of us.

Abramoff is a small part of a $3 billion-a-year lobbying industry. Even so, his methods have helped make him a big name. And his excesses could even end up being a catalyst for positive change.
