Trevor Cook on public relations, social media and politics

The summit is profitable for some

A meeting of luvvies, run by and for luvvies:

A PUBLIC relations company run by a Rudd Government staffer’s wife was awarded a $60,000 contract
to manage the media at the 2020 Summit. The contract was awarded
without going to open tender… Australian Securities and Investments
Commission records show CMAX is solely owned by Christian Taubenschlag,
who has been Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon’s media adviser since
January.

But surely that was an exception? Er, no:

The AusTender records also show the vice-chancellor’s office at the
University of Melbourne was paid $284,500 for the summit. Professor
Glyn Davis, the university’s vice-chancellor and a close friend of Mr
Rudd’s, led discussion among 1000 delegates, who paid their own
expenses at the summit.

The Government’s website revealed the contract was awarded without
going to open tender, and was to be paid directly to the
vice-chancellor’s office. University of Melbourne corporate affairs
manager Christina Buckridge said the money was used for “recovery
costs” for the university.

Nothing improper in any of this, of course. Just the sound of oinking.
