Whatever happened to RSS?

A couple of years ago, I thought RSS would be the next big thing after search. Many people did. Some people even speculated that the look of a website would become a lot less important because hardly anyone would visit them, choosing instead to interact with the web through RSS. But today, while RSS is used in many applications on the web (igoogle, itunes, customised Yahoo front pages etc), the number of people using RSS with newsreaders doesn’t seem to have increased anywhere near expectations. Basically, search is still dominant. I think most people think subscribing to feeds and managing a newsreader is way too difficult when you can just search for stuff when you need it.

Completely agree Trevor — I was amazed when I moved to Deacons how few law firms offer RSS on regularly updated content. If the feeds are not there, it’s no wonder people dont see value in newsreaders.
