China lied to the IOC and the world:
CHINA’S vow to open up its country to the world through the
Olympic Games was in tatters last night as an International Olympic
Committee member, Kevan Gosper of Australia, apologised to the
global press for misleading them about access to the internet.China’s Communist Party regime has put in place a reinvigorated
internet censorship program blocking controversial websites for
journalists at the Beijing Olympic Games while demanding that
hotels implement an intrusive spyware program to monitor guests’
internet use.
As I pointed out in my ‘flame of shame’ piece back in April, the international olympic brand is in real trouble:
Allowing the Chinese communist party to use the Olympics to validate
its hardline regime is possibly the biggest mistake the world Olympic
movement has ever made.
With Tibet, Darfur, human rights abuses, censorship, rancid pollution – China is not showcasing a great civilisation but the horrors of its backward and brutal regime.
And Gosper? What a disgrace. He should resign.

Isn’t the Olympics bound up with that other ancient Greek idea of democracy?
Obviously not for the IOC…
