A big problem faced by most corporates (and many individuals) as they enter the brave new world of social media is coming to terms with the idea that success will require you to relinquish control, well at least enough to convince users and visitors that you are genuine. If you try to fake it, it’s obvious and it annoys people so much they not only don’t participate they criticise you on your website and theirs.
Sydneysider Cheryl Gledhill is not convinced that the National Australia Bank has really addressed the problem satisfactorily in it’s future bank project:
So shame, NAB, shame. You could have actually made a difference by listening to people (which you are claiming to do) but instead you try to discredit and silence your users that don’t think you’re amazing. You have shown no honesty or transparency in this and I hope your users eat you alive.
A dishonest and not-very-clever attempt to harness the wisdom of the crowd.
Keep it real, guys.
