UPDATED: Colin Powell endorses Obama

The rest of this was posted before Powell’s endorsement.

Powell will be on NBC’s Meet the Press this Sunday and the speculation is rife that Powell will add his name to the growing list of endorsements for Obama.

Powell’s endorsement could be symbolically important because of his credibility and popularity. As a Huffington Post writer summed up:

And, of course, all of this doesn’t even account for the fact that this is the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs — a man who loves America and loves America’s military. For all the smears being hurled about “palling around with terrorists” and “white flag of retreat,” nothing can counter that like a Republican former 4-star coming out and saying “This guy loves America as much as me.”

Since the final debate, the Washington Post and LA Times have endorsed Obama. The Chicago Tribune has also endorsed Obama, the first time the newspaper, founded in 1847, has endorsed a Democrat for President. According to Editor & Publisher, Obama now has a 3 to 1 lead over McCain in newspaper endorsements — 51 newspapers with a total 6,299,363 daily circulation. At least seven of those papers endorsed President Bush in 2004.

Last week, conservative commentator Christopher Buckley endorsed Obama. He has now been joined by Philadelphia talk radio host Michael Smerconish.

Powell probably would want to support McCain but with Palin it is an embarrassment and would cost him some respect.

At least if he did support Obama people would understand on two levels; that the Obama team is competent and that a team with Palin in it would be very hard to support.
