I’ve long believed this to be the case. I check out people using the Internet before I meet them in a business setting, and people use the Internet to check me out. If you blog, they find a lot richer lode of stuff to peruse, and get interested by, before that all-important first meeting happens. As time goes on, if you don’t have a blog, your claim to be a thought-leader, well-respected in your field, an achiever etc will sound a little hollow. Hell, where’s the evidence?
blogs are the professional’s curriculum vitae. They are a standing record of strong thinking about a subject. When you devote the time to put together a blog post covering your field, you’re likely doing this:
- Research
- Analysis
- Linking to others
- Establishing your voice
- Influencing the thinking of others
- Showing the ability to pull together longer form thinking, a requirement in professional work

You may be right that the blog is the new C.V..
If so, the anti-C.V. would be Facebook and MySpace where some people are prone to put up career-limiting information, not to mention stuff that journalists like to mine when a previously unknown person makes headlines.
