Newspapers in Australia are not struggling as much for readership as they are struggling for REVENUE.

With the migration of classifieds to the internet, the only good money newspapers are making is in display advertising.

Lifestyle supplements are a valuable source of such adverts, providing targeted markets - food, fashion, electronics and the like.

Breaking news stories alone isn't going to do it, because they will just be pinched ... uh, "aggregated" ... by online sites.

G'day Trevor

Do you seen any particular separation between the broadsheets and the tabloids?

My anecdotal feeling here in Melbourne is that the Hun seems to run rings around the Age in terms of the amount of content and circulation. And a lot of this content seems to focus on information and lifestyle themes rather than straight up news reporting. Any weekly review of both front pages gives a fair indication of this.

If I was taking a guess I'd say the only thing keeping newspapers in print is that the punters are just wont pay for subscription news content in the face of the proliferation of alternative, free news outlets.
