Defining Media, Cross-Mating Elephants and Zebras

While many ‘thought leaders’ in Australia are playing catch-up on the media vs social media debate, in the US some of the better thinkers, at least, are pushing ahead:

Five years ago there was media and social media and the two were distinct. You know what was what. It was like there elephants and zebras. You knew the difference.

Today all media is social, all social is media. It’s impossible to separate the two.

The media all actively use social technologies to innovate, converse and collaborate with their audiences. Meanwhile, social content from friends – be it tweets or status updates or videos – all should be considered media. Yes, the elephants and the zebras have cross-mated.

Trevor: it would be helpful if you would indicate why anyone should care?

I do care, about the distinction between comment and reporting, but that another kettle of fish. News Corp has blurred this line for so long that now that, as they seek to charge for on-line content, people have forgotten that reporting has real value, far beyond the fleeting superficiality of comment.

Sorry, Rupert – can’t have it both ways.
