The biggest benefit claimed for organic food is that you know what you’re eating i.e. you’re not eating pesticides. Yet, the UK Government spends a bucket of money on a study of studies that ignores the key claim:

“There may be a difference in pesticide residues but they didn’t test for that in this paper, and there may be environmental differences but they didn’t test for that,” Emeritus Professor Truswell said.

Despite the fact that the study is largely meaningless because it ignores a key question, the media has a field day dissing another “middle-class” issue.

More darkly, why does the study ignore the key issue? Are they just stupid? And academic journals are full of rigorously conducted but meaningless or deceptive studies, so no surprise there. Or is it some agenda the bureaucrats are running on behalf of some interest group? Never believe that because something is funded by government that it is independent, as is claimed for this research.

We stress about food. We think obesity is not just a disease but a moral failing, killing animals for food is not only bad for us it is a major cause of global warming. But when it comes to sex we go out of our way not to be judgmental. Headline-seeking politicians are much more sanctimonious and self-righteous about food than about sex. That’s inversion of the way we thought about food and sex a generation ago. And it’s weird. Here’s a great article on the strange morality of food and sex.

AUSTRALIA, 2014: President Rudd yesterday extended the Federal Government’s list of banned internet sites to include any material relating to takeaway food. “After constructive ongoing dialogue with a diverse range of experts in the relevant medical disciplines, we have taken this pro-active regulatory initiative in the interests of the health of all working families,” he said. The “junk food filter”, as Mr Rudd described it, follows last year’s decision to block access to sites promoting the consumption of alcohol or providing information on illegal home-brewing.

Here they come again – the do-gooder social engineers who give honest hard-working nannies a bad name.

I love hearing about all the different interests that can find expression in social media, and all the great connections people can make through their blogs and podcasts. Great restaurant too, the grilled meats were fantastic. The four of us ate a lot and it cost just over eighty bucks total including soft drinks and coffee (be warned though no alcohol is served and BYO is not allowed).
