With Obama’s $3-million, half-hour ad set to air in the US later this week, it’s seems like a fitting time to look back on simpler days, when a cartoon and a catchy jingle were the cutting edge of political advertising.

New York’s Museum for the Moving Image has created a fantastic archive of US presidential campaign ads from the last 50 years at The Living Room Candidate, with gems like this 1952 Eisenhower ad:
