It’s true that every festival show is different, every performer unique. But after notching up double digits on the comedy festival tally sheet it’s almost impossible not to feel a sense of déjà vu.
You hear a lot of jokes about belonging to a particular race, a lot of jokes about jaded ex-lovers, a lot of jokes about shared house living, getting old, staying young, going to work, remaining unemployed…
Those feeling pangs of festival familiarity could do well, very well, to refresh the palette with some good ol’ fashioned sketch comedy c/o a trio of 20-something comics in the breezy smile-stamping romp Wing Attack! – PANTS (Pants).
The show is a collection of absurd comedy vignettes from Peader Thomas, Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall and Andy Matthews. They understand that this kind of pun parlour needs to keep moving and keep moving quick. Sometimes the performers don’t leave the stage or even move before launching the next sketch.
Memorable bits include a game show host featuring a game show host and two participants who are game show hosts, a parent teacher interview in which the parent is allergic to criticism and a man who has lost his arms and legs and is about to go under the knife for somewhat unconventional surgery.
At its best, Wing Attack! is like a well massaged skit from Whose Line is it Anyway? or a late night sketch TV show but, well, good. It won’t set the comedy scene on fire but it’s fun, silly and moreish.
Wing Attack! in PANTS (Pants) is on Monday to Tuesday at 7:30pm, Thursday to Friday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 6:30pm until April 22 at The Tuxedo Cat.
