After half a century of making posters … Chips Mackinolty is a one trick pony!

Since then? Countless posters and street art paste-ups; illustrations, cartoons, newspapers, newsletters, magazines, catalogues and books; T-shirts, banners, murals, cassette and CD covers; business cards and letterheads—and the occasional fabric design.

Everyone has others one is obligated to (has to care for) and others who care for one. No man or woman is an Island. ‘Skin’ classification guides the nature and intensity of relationships. A feature of the system that appeals to many ‘westerners’ is “mother in law avoidance” In former stricter times it was absolutely forbidden for one’s mother-in-law to be addressed or to be in the same room. It still happens that someone might wait outside a shop because “there is no room”.

Bob on Bob. Bob Dylan in Sydney and Newcastle, August 2018. A review by Robert Adamson

My life as a roadie, Part 1: For those gone to the great bump-out in the sky.

The recent call by the Australian Road Crew Association (ARCA)—including this piece on the ABC by Guy Stayner that highlights the appalling suicide rates in the live music industry—gave me pause to reflect on my previous career in music, mainly working as a roadie (doing FoH sound in the main) with rock ‘n roll bands […]

Finals Week 3 – GWS v Western Bulldogs: The Halted March of the Orange Army

This is a guest post by Preston Towers. It was originally published at The Footy Almanac. When I was heading towards the Showground with the rest of the GIANTS’ Orange Army last Saturday, there were a cluster of stories behind us and in front of us. For me, I remembered the early days of […]

‘Pig Iron’ Bob Menzies. From the other side of the cultural divide

‘Pig Iron’ Bob Menzies. From the other side of the cultural divide

It is interesting that Howard, only the second PM to lose an election along with his seat now clings to Menzies as if to wipe out that historic defeat. Growing up under Menzies was an enervating experience: no wonder so many urban Australians got out, from Patrick White to Richard Neville and beyond: Chips Mackinolty

Les MacFarlane C.M.G. of Moroak: Cattleman, politician and racist?

Mr MacFarlane has now confirmed this belief ... Mr MacFarlane's response which is intimidatory, arrogant, overbearing and in no way becoming a Member of Parliament. We do not believe that such a man should hold the office of Speaker of Parliament, an office to which the qualities of an unbiased and fairminded character are normally attributed.

Jessica Mauboy, Australia Day and taking the cheap shots

I am able to celebrate Australia day and embrace the stories of survival. I want to know the stories and share them with people as well. I have accepted that as a big part of my life, as a 24-year-old indigenous woman.

You call that a flood? THIS is a flood – the Mississippi River in May…

You call that a flood? THIS is a flood – the Mississippi River in May…

The real story, however, is what this is doing to the Mississippi river basin. Thankfully, we are protected by the best levees in the Valley (northern Delta counties), which did not even fail in 1927 (Cleveland hasn't been flooded by the River since 1903!), so unless there is an earthquake, we should be all right.
