Coomera was created at the 2009 redistribution on the back of the Gold Coast popular explosion, making it one of two electorates straddling the northern Gold Coast and the southern edge of metropolitan Brisbane. The other such electorate, Albert, provided the new seat with about half of its voters, the remainder coming from Broadwater and Gaven at the Gold Coast end. The seat had a notional Labor margin of 8.3% going into the 2009 election, but this has since been demolished by consecutive swings of 10.2% in 2009 and 21.3% in 2012. The latter result was the biggest of the election, in keeping with a particularly savage reaction against Labor across the Gold Coast.

The electorate is bounded to the west by the Pacific Motorway, and encompasses at its southern end the Gold Coast suburbs of Helensvale, Coomera and Hope Island, and in the north the Logan City suburb of Eagleby in the north. The latter area is notably stronger for Labor than the remainder the party’s vote having been over 10% higher there at the 2012 election. Coomera’s LNP member since 2009 has been Michael Crandon, formerly a local financial adviser.
