In comments on his post, Brook clarifies why he’s engaging in the debate:

My style won’t be (predominantly) to ‘defend’ the mainstream view. It will be to ask Ian various questions about which I’ve very curious to hear his answer. I think this will serve a purpose (if I didn’t think so, I wouldn’t have agreed — I acknowledge that ‘debate’ over the fundamental science is pointless).

Sounds like a good event, although I did find the hosting arrangements ironic:
