I’m confused. Do media proprietors influence the content that their businesses produce or not?

If they don’t, then why does it matter whether or not one of Australia’s richest miners, who campaigned against the Labor government’s proposed mining profits tax, owns a chunk of a TV network? If they do, is Andrew’s initial comment a bit disingenuous, even though it’s no doubt factually correct?
